These small sculptures are depictions of blue whales’ tails, as they submerge in the water and give the classic “tail wave” in their descent. The whale’s tail is a popular symbol for the Southern New England area, especially New Bedford, MA which was dubbed the “Whaling Capitol of the World” during the 1800’s. New Bedford was also the home to author Herman Melville who wrote the American classic, “Moby Dick” and based the story in New Bedford.
